Auston Taylour Matthews (born September 17, 1997) is an American professional ice hockey center and alternate captain for the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League (NHL). By the time the football resumed in 1946, a now over-30 Matthews continued to turn out for Stoke City. As noted in Les Scott’s memoir of Stanley Matthews’ life, The Way It Was, a dying Jack made Stanley make two promises to him: to take care of his mother and to win the FA Cup. The three statues portray Sir Stanley Matthews at three different stages of his career spanning over 30 years. A time capsule commemorating Stoke City's 150th Anniversary has also been buried next to the memorial.
