Quills is a 2000 period film directed by Philip Kaufman and adapted from the Obie award-winning play by Doug Wright, who also wrote the original screenplay. QUILLS is a movie version of Doug Wright’s infamous play about the Marquis de Sade, the radical French writer (circa 1740 to 1814) who wrote pornographic, sado-masochistic literature.

Some of the events that transpire during the two-hour running time are not only disturbing, but also thought-provoking. Synopsis: A nobleman with a literary flair, the Marquis de Sade lives in a madhouse where a beautiful laundry maid smuggles his erotic stories to a printer, defying orders from the asylum's resident priest.
