U.S. Open champion Gary Woodland paid a special visit to TODAY to surprise Amy Bockerstette, a golfer with Down syndrome who has become a friend and inspiration. PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Gary Woodland kept repeating the phrase to himself throughout the final round of the U.S. Open … "I’ve got this." ️ "Amy ... you’re our hero.” U.S. Open winner Gary Woodland is special on and off the course. Gary and Amy’s friendship goes back to earlier this year at the Waste Management Phoenix Open in Arizona. But Woodland’s fondest memory of competing at TPC Scottsdale happened during last year’s pro-am round when he met Amy Bockerstette, a then 20-year-old Special Olympian with Down Syndrome, and invited her to play the par-3 16th hole. Woodland became a Bockerstette fan that day and Amy became a fan of Gary's as well.

Fast-forward five months and Amy watched live as Woodland captured his first major title at the 119th U.S. Open.
